Ye Olde Gingerbread

Ingredients

  • Servings: 12
  • 1 egg 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 2 1/2 cups flour, ixcing sugar for sprinkling
  • whipped cream
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tablespoon brandy (optional)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon grated lemon rind
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1 lemon, juice of
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves

Recipe

  • 1 in a large bowl, combine egg, sugar, sortening, molasses, salt, baking soda and ginger.
  • 2 when thoroughly blended, add hot water; stir, then add flour. pour into 9x9-inch baking dish. bake at 350f for 45 minutes, or unti la toothpick inserted in the center comes our clean.
  • 3 cool and sprinkle with icing sugar.
  • 4 lemon sauce: cream butter and sugar together; blend in brandy if using. beat in egg and lemon rind.
  • 5 transfer mixrture to top of double boiler. gradually add boiling water to mixture, stirring constantly.
  • 6 heat 7-8 minutes. stir in lemon juice and spices. serve hot, makes 2 cups.
