Ingredients

- 1 egg 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup shortening
- 1 cup molasses
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon ginger
- 1 cup hot water
- 2 1/2 cups flour, ixcing sugar for sprinkling
- whipped cream
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 tablespoon brandy (optional)
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon grated lemon rind
- 1/2 cup boiling water
- 1 lemon, juice of
- 1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
Recipe
- 1 in a large bowl, combine egg, sugar, sortening, molasses, salt, baking soda and ginger.
- 2 when thoroughly blended, add hot water; stir, then add flour. pour into 9x9-inch baking dish. bake at 350f for 45 minutes, or unti la toothpick inserted in the center comes our clean.
- 3 cool and sprinkle with icing sugar.
- 4 lemon sauce: cream butter and sugar together; blend in brandy if using. beat in egg and lemon rind.
- 5 transfer mixrture to top of double boiler. gradually add boiling water to mixture, stirring constantly.
- 6 heat 7-8 minutes. stir in lemon juice and spices. serve hot, makes 2 cups.
