Kheema

Total Time: 45 mins Preparation Time: 15 mins Cook Time: 30 mins

Ingredients

  • Servings: 4
  • 1 lb lean ground beef or 1 lb lamb
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 6 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons finely minced fresh ginger
  • salt
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 (10 ounce) package frozen peas, thawed
  • 2 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup chickpeas, canned, rinsed (ceci, garbanzos)

Recipe

  • 1 brown beef in a large skillet. drain all but 2 tablespoons of fat. add chopped.
  • 2 onions, garlic, ginger and salt to beef. sauté 2 minutes. stir in spices and mix well. cook 1 minute over medium high heat. add peas, potatoes and mix again. bring to a boil, cover pan and cook over medium heat 10 minutes. stir in sauce, water and chickpeas.

  • 5 serve over rice or in pita bread, with yogurt, fresh tomatoes and sliced cucumbers.
